How to Protect Your Privacy During a Protest

Protesting is a right—but your digital footprint can expose you to surveillance, tracking, or even retaliation.

The Digital Risks of Showing Up

When you attend a protest, your smartphone becomes a potential surveillance device. Law enforcement agencies have increasingly used digital tools to monitor and identify protesters. For instance, facial recognition technology has been employed at protests in various countries, raising concerns about privacy and civil liberties.

Moreover, during the 2024 Democratic National Convention, there were reports of potential deployment of cell-site simulators, devices that can intercept phone signals, without clear authorization. These technologies can collect sensitive data and have been criticized for potential abuses in monitoring and suppressing dissent.

Digital Safety Tips for Protesters

To help protect your privacy during protests, consider the following steps:

  • Use a passcode instead of biometric locks: Disable Face ID or fingerprint unlocks.
  • Limit location tracking: Turn off location services and Bluetooth when not in use.
  • Be cautious with photos and videos: Avoid capturing identifiable features of fellow protesters.
  • Consider using a burner phone: If possible, use a separate device with minimal personal data.
