Internet Street Smarts in the Park

Cyber Collective brought digital literacy to Central Park with free outdoor workshop series.

NEW YORK, NY — On Wednesday, June 5, Cyber Collective hosted Internet Street Smarts in the Park, a free and open-air digital literacy workshop in Central Park that welcomed New Yorkers for an evening of community, conversation, and real-world tools for staying safe online.

The event is part of Cyber Collective’s broader Internet Street Smarts initiative, which focuses on making digital safety approachable and accessible. The series covers topics like online scams, data privacy, and digital consent, and is designed especially for people often excluded from traditional tech spaces, including Black, Brown, immigrant, and working-class communities.

“Our communities are constantly being targeted online, yet rarely invited to understand or challenge the systems behind it,” said Tazin Khan, Founder and CEO of Cyber Collective. “This workshop is our way of taking tech education out of institutions and into real, public spaces where learning can happen on our own terms.”

While exclusive tech events dominated the city last week, Internet Street Smarts in the Park offered an alternative space for everyday New Yorkers to engage with digital issues. No badges, no panels, and no gatekeeping. Just practical tools, fresh air, and conversations rooted in care.

The Internet Street Smarts series reflects Cyber Collective’s mission to bridge digital rights, culture, and community. These events create space for collective learning, trust-building, and empowerment in the digital age—and Cyber Collective is actively seeking opportunities to bring them to communities that need them most.

Cyber Collective is part of a growing movement of BIPOC-led organizations working to redefine who holds power in conversations about technology, safety, and digital rights. As one of the few women-of-color-led groups focused on tech justice, Cyber Collective centers culture, care, and accessibility in all of its work. Reporters interested in speaking with Founder and CEO Tazin Khan or learning more about the role of community-led digital advocacy are encouraged to reach out.
